Frequently Asked Questions

What is SLV Hoops?

SLV Hoops is a committee within SLV Youth, Inc., a non-profit organization focused on the enablement of youth activities and sports in San Lorenzo Valley community. Our mission for SLV Hoops is to provide a safe, fun, learning environment to boys and girls from 3rd to 8th grade who are looking to play recreational basketball.

When will the season start and end?

The season runs from November through the first weekend in March – Games begin on first Saturday in January unless its a holiday weekend. Teams may practice after the teams are formed.

When and where can I register my child?

You can use our secure online registration platform.

How much is it to register my child?

The registration fee is $125.

How about Refunds?

We do give refunds up to our skills evaluation. However, we deduct expenses that have been paid for your child. Examples are credit card fees, insurance premiums, equipment purchases, game jersey’s and facility rental fees. Refunds are not given once games begin.

I don’t do Credit or Debit Cards

That’s cool too!. Go ahead and select the “Pay by Check” option when registering and mail a check to:

SLV Youth
13200 Hwy 9, Suite D
Boulder Creek, CA 95006

Be sure to place your child’s name on the check.

Can 2nd Graders Participate?

We do not have a 2nd-grade division. Exceptions can be made only when there is space available and the player has the skill level to participate at the higher level. This is determined by the committee at our skills evaluation. Registration fees will be refunded if it is determined that the participant should hold off another year.

What are the Practice Requirements?

Each team will have one indoor practice per week on Sundays.

Can teams have additional indoor practices at other venues?

No.  We are insured to have indoor practices at the middle and high school gym.  Our insurance allows for practices on the outdoor basketball courts on the Felton campus. Therefore teams may practice on the outdoor courts as much as they would like. Though we only recommend two practices per week. Coaches ARE NOT permitted to reserve indoor gym space on their own. If it is determined that a team has an INDOOR practice at a facility other than the SLVHS Gym and the SLVMS Gym, that team will forfeit their game that following Saturday.

How do you select the teams?

A small group of members and coaches select teams based on ability, athleticism, and physical size. The selection committee is committed to forming balanced teams through the evaluation process and our knowledge from previous experience with players. Members of the selection committee may be coaching a team but will not be assigned a team until after the teams are formed. This is sometimes called a “Blind Draft”. Once teams are formed the coaches are placed on a team and their child is placed on that team too. Head Coaches cannot pre-select “Assistant Coaches” or “Team Parents” with the goal of placing children on the same team.

SLV Hoops Player Evaluation Form

Can I request a team?

Sorry, we do not place players on teams by request. We will consider a request if the request does not interfere with our selection process or extenuating circumstances.

Do we offer scholarships?

We do not have a scholarship policy. We do consider each request and circumstance. The league is open to a payment plan. We do our best to place every child on a team but there are no guarantees your child will be placed on a team without paying the registration fee. If offered, we can consider volunteer hours in exchange for registration fees. For example, our referees receive a stipend of $15 for the younger divisions and $20 for the older divisions.

What if I have other questions?
